Maybe a version of Riz's circle of blood but with monsters instead of forts?

Then you'd have 8 neutral sea monsters swimming around and no wild islands in the center (assuming the islands the forts were on got replaced by the monsters). I think it works pretty well as-is, though I haven't done it with forts yet.

Well, I'd not remove the islands.

Bump, and an update. I added the two epic campaign games coming up, as well as El Cazador's first custom set.

Subject: JADE INVADERS FROM OUTER SEAS!   PostPosted: Mon Sep 05, 2016 4:17 am Reply with quote

I'm working on a "Jade Invaders" scenario. While it takes place in a time period before Pirates is really applicable, I think it could be fun.

This is what I said before:
el_cazador wrote:
Here's the gist of my fleet challenge:

Jade Invaders / Jade Raiders / Chinese of the Mediterranean
:
It's the 14th century, and the Chinese are coming! Europe / North Africa / the Near East hear of the vast wealth aboard the mighty Treasure Fleet and of its immense firepower . . .

Object:
Steal the most gold from the treasure fleet.

Factions:
Contestants choose 1 faction for a fleet of 50 points. No 0LR+5 crew.

1. Catholic Alliance: May build fleet with English, French, and Spanish ships and crew. May use galleys from any released set (no RtSS), possibly 1-3 masters (only square) from SM and CC. May use Mercenary galleys.

2. Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire): Must build fleet with Viking ships (Varangian mercenaries). May use Viking, Pirate, and (Mercenary?) crew. May use Mercenary galleys (and 1-2 masters?). Gets 15 extra build points due to Longships / or Longships cost 1/2 and get no extra cannons.

3. Pirates: Must build fleet with Pirate galleys (and 1-2 masters?) and crew. Gets 10 build point penalty.

4. Islamic League: Must build fleet with Corsair galleys (may use one Pirate galley?). May use Corsair, Pirate, and (Mercenary?) crew.

Treasure Fleet:
Not quite sure on this one, but it gets at least the Baochuan and a few escorts.

This isn't final. I'd like to hear your thoughts!

I think that perhaps a "fixed" scenario, more like QDJ, could be interesting.

The Jade player is trying to sail to a safe port at the opposite edge of the map, while the other players are trying to steal the most gold.

The Jade fleet would probably look something like this:
Jade Invaders wrote:
Baochuan + Admiral Zheng He + Ms. Cheng + 10 gold (and maybe UTs for jade, ivory, spice, etc).
Grand Dynasty + chainshot specialist + 3 gold
Virtuous Wind + fixed location captain + 3 gold
Clear Wind + fixed location captain + 3 gold
Divine Wind + fixed location captain + 3 gold
Sea Crane + 3 gold
Sea Duck + 3 gold
The captains cannot move between ships. The Jades, while showing force, aren't expecting battle.

The Catholic Alliance should feature four-masted and other sized galleys, and include some Barbary Coast "crusader" crew like Roderick the Pure . I was thinking along these lines:
Catholic Alliance wrote:
Alexandria + crew
La Espada de Dios + crew
Sirene (RtSS) + crew
and then 3 one-masted galleys
They may need more to be competitive without being dominant, as the Jades are getting ganged up on.

The (Eastern) Roman Empire / Byzantine Empire has no representation in Pirates (unless you count the Greek Nikos Chelios), but Vikings do. You may know that the ERE employed vikings (Varangians) as mercenaries, the imperial guardsmen, and as marines, so I think that they make a decent substitution.
Roman Empire wrote:
Justinian -- a custom 17 pt, 4 mast, 5 cargo, S+S, 2L,2S,2S,2S, +1 vs non-Viking(?), Dromon (basically firepot + galley) + crew
Asgard + Shayna Duex + crew
Hrothgar + crew
Fenrir + crew
etc.
This needs filling out, but I like the idea of at least one Dromon alongside longships. Razz

The Pirates... well, PoTC gave theme some extra galleys, so I think they can stand alone. Otherwise they'll need adjustment.

The Islamic League would include some Barbary all-stars:
Islamic League wrote:
Nubian Prince
Tiger's Eye
Fire Djinn
etc., accompanied by smaller ships

I have less ideas for them than the Romans. Razz

As for rules, there needs to be some incentive to steal your own gold, not to take it from other players, and some place to stash it, if you desire to remove ships from the fray.

So, any ideas? I think we can make an interesting scenario.

I've added to the first post.

It's definitely interesting, just somewhat complicated at first glance. It also features an intricate setup - plenty of players could be alienated by what pieces they don't have, and as I've discovered in the past, using a lot of proxies in lots of games can become confusing and/or take away from the fun a little bit.

It's similar to the convoy idea (Convoy Command). Perhaps ships can only steal gold from the Jade ships? I feel like everyone is allied against the Jades but in reality they're in competition with each other...

Perhaps something more in line with this:

Jades get X points per player in the game. Other players get Y points to build a fleet (within a faction), for 2-5 players.

I've even thought of having a dummy (0 point) baochuan that works more like a moving island than a ship, allowing the Jade player to better customize the escorts.

@a7xfanben
You're right, it is similar. I guess it's a themed variant. Razz

Can't believe I didn't already have these two custom sets in the main post. I just added them:

-
Pirates of the Kraken Sea
(mr_awesome)

-
Pirates of the Tolling Depths

Pirates of the Joyful seas scenario:

Description: Whitebeard and his helpers have come to the seven seas! But while Whitebeard is making merry, those who aren't can seize the opportunity to plunder their foes!

Goal: To be the one with over 50% of the gold in the game! All gold starts on home islands or Whitebeard's fleet. Gold fired at you by Whitebeard's armada does count towards winning, if you can get it to your home island. Your home island might be vulnerable to attack unlike normal. This is determined based on if you have ships not currently engaged in revelry. Those whose entire armada is engaged in revelry cannot defend their home island.

Special scenario mechanics:
No abilities can prevent you from being hit by Joysides Attack. All ships, sea monsters etc. are considered to have at least one cargo.

Setup:
Whitebeard, his sleigh, and his helpers start out in the center of the board. Whitebeard's raiders cannot win the game normally(Whitebeard only wins if ALL other ships are engaged in revelry) but they do have a home island. Each player places a home island with 20 points of gold on 10 coins in their home island. UT can be included. But the number of UTs should be the same for all players. Each player places 2 wild islands, and 2 terrain after placing their HI.

Ok... prob needs something more, but the idea amuses me. Very Happy

I'm just not into the whole Santa/Sleigh stuff in a game about pirates and naval warfare. Just not how I enjoy the game. I added it to the main post though! Smile
