Subject: Fleet Challenge 06-16-08: Race for the Gold!   PostPosted: Tue Jun 17, 2008 2:53 am Reply with quote

For my first fleet challenge, I hope I don't mess it up too badly.

I've been inspired by all the Olympics advertising, so in the spirit of international cooperation and competition, I figured we'd stage a Pirates version of the Summer Games. The rules:

40 points / most gold (medals) wins.

Each fleet must be from one of the six current factions(American, Cursed, English, French, Pirate, or Spanish), but there can be more than one entry for a faction, so no need to claim them here.

You may not include crew or ships from a different primary faction, but the other 6 (Golden Legacy) factions' crew (no ships) are fair game if you can get their abilities to function on your primary faction ships. Ex-Pats are easiest here (Eileen's only a little Irish, really she's French!).

Each fleet must have at least one crew, ship or equipment with the Parley keyword. (Friendly International Relations!)

In order to keep the Pirates and French from having too big an advantage, the Soul Mark equipment will work on both Cursed and Pirates for this challenge and additional Letter of Marque type equipment beyond the first on a ship will take up no cargo space.

No Musketeers, Marines, Cannoneers, or Cannoneer Specialists (Peaceful competion!)

The World-Hater ability does not function(International Cooperation!), but crew with this ability text are allowed.

No Forts.

For authenticity, non-Letter of Marque type equipment (perfomance enhancers) are allowed in the challenge, but only the single use (LE) variety. (Don't want to get caught cheating!) Very Happy

And finally, no Silver Explorers. (Go for the Gold!)

Everything else is allowed, including (but not limited to) 0LR crew, Events (Weather), UTs, and sea creatures (contending with Mother Nature).

Please name your fleets: Name's Gold Race fleet.

Please post any questions and/or point out anything that I've forgotten that will ruin the challenge.

Oh, and how do you put a "sticky" on a post?

Great work, Milbarber!
For stickies, colringbk will take care of that...

HI raiding is definitely allowed. The US has been raiding gold medal talent from all over the world for years!

I really liked all the entries. There were some very creative ideas and every one was unique. The judging was quite difficult, but here is a breakdown:

Darrin's UPS variant was really interesting as usual, but this one has a few problems. 1st, Powder Pete in a Pirate fleet was a violation of the challenge requirements, which did not allow mixing of the 6 main nations. Second, the Soul Mark on Banshee's Cry puts her over her cargo capacity and you need an empty slot to use Don Pedro's swapping ability, so really that's 2 over for strategy purposes. I think this fleet might have been fast enough to win if not for these issues, but I have to disqualify at this point. Sorry!

Phymatine going with Captain Whitebeard was very surprising, but after I checked on the Wizkids boards it seems that he isn't actually banned. It is up to individual privateers as to if and how he is played. I said anything else was OK, so he plays. Unfortunately for Phymatine, cabinboy88 played Angelica, and since Whitebeard's "shut down" ability appears to be based on putting crew to sleep, I'm going to rule it doesn't work on sea creatures that can't carry crew. If Angelica succeeds on a swoop attack things could get pretty ugly pretty quickly for Phymatine's fleet. So Phymatine wins the bronze.

ziotoo4 really got into the spirit of the challenge and built a very competitive fleet. Some UTs would have ensured higher value coins to make the HI raiding strategy more effective. I think missing those high value coins is the downfall of the fleet. cabinboy88's fleet is built to clean out islands quickly and Angelica can eliminate the small treasure runners from an opposing fleet, using Divers to take all the treasure from one of those. Even if the HIs are close together, the invulnerable White Rose won't be able to steal enough point value in gold to stop cabinboy88's treasure runners from bringing home enough treasure to win.

So, ziotoo4 takes silver and cabinboy88 wins the gold!

cabinboy88, now you get to post the next fleet challenge today.
Very Happy

Banshee's Cry is not over her cargo capacity. Captain Jack Sparrow is linked to all pirate ships, so BC gets an extra cargo space for him.

Your other points are dead-on, however... it didn't occur to me that Don Pedro required an open cargo space to be used. (I originally had Bloody Jewel with Jimmy Legs on board for the SAC ability, and I tried to squeeze Don Pedro in later because I was worried about crew-killing UTs.)

And I should have paid closer attention to the rules... I didn't realize Powder Pete was a problem. Question, though... would you have allowed Amos to bring in Powder Pete after the game had started?

If I'd managed to get the fleet posted sooner, I might have been able to fix some of these issues, but I wasn't able to finish fiddling with it until Saturday.

Congrats to cabinboy88! It never occurred to me to expect a Sea Dragon.

Darrin,

Ah! Of course you are right about the Jack Sparrow link. I think I would have allowed the Amos/Pete move, but I can't say for certain. It depends on how I could justify it in the Olympics theme. I asked this on the fleet post, but why didn't you use Ahura Mazda?

WOW!! I did not expect to win, but this is so awesome. Thanks a lot. As for the new challenge, I will hopefully have that posted later today, or early tomorrow morning. I've never created a challenge before, so sorry for any inconvinence. Thanks again, and great job to the other participants. P.S. Any advice for the challenge would be a big help.

Not enough cargo space to do everything I wanted. I was trying to fit in two +3 gold ships. Although you could argue a +3 and a +2 would probably have been enough to win. I was also trying to use Powder Pete to transfer the 4th gold coin at the end of turn 2, so I could save a point I would have otherwise spent on an oarsman. Song could have been used for another +1 ship, but Genny Gallows requires docking to use her +2 gold ability, and I would have had to add a Helmsman for another 2 points, and another Oarsman for the 4th coin... I would have had to remove FotG, and anyone packing Mermaids could kill this fleet.

As for the Amos/Powder Pete loophole, I tried asking a similar question with ziotoo4's Golden Legacy challenge, and he said no, although I didn't push him for a rationale. If I'd realized early enough that it was a problem... I probably would have argued the fleet-building rules shouldn't apply once the game has started, but that's really your call. As far as an Olympic rationale...

Well, I guess I'd have to establish that Powder Pete has some kind of dual citizenship, but then again "Pirate" isn't really recognized as a sovereign nation (unless you consider Libertatia to be non-apocryphal, but even they were supposedly anti-state). There's ample evidence of Olympic athletes switching nationalities to qualify or circumvent various rulings/punishments/political entanglements. You mention this in the rules, although I'm not sure why the lesser nations can take advantage of this but the major nations can't (some U.S. athletes that fail to qualify at the U.S. Olympic trials have gone over to smaller nations to qualify there.) But I'm not sure it's ever happened once the games have started, which could be seen as a strike against my argument. So, uh... Amos blackmailed or shanghai'd Power Pete? Not a very sporting argument there, either. Perhaps they are old friends or very tight drinking buddies (based on Amos' artwork).
