UPS 2 IS OFFICIALLY THE BEST FLEET OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow. I am truly astounded. I check in here occasionally, and every once in a while someone leaves a comment on one of my reviews, but I didn't realize that people were still playing my fleets in tournaments.

And apparently there's a program to play this game online?

WHY THE **** WASN'T I TOLD ABOUT THIS!

Anyway. Words fail me. I cannot adequately express my gratitude to a7xfanben and Xerecs for investing so much time and energy into this.

I now need to set aside a day or two so I can watch the battles on youtube. Reading through the thread, I noted a few things... apparently putting in Periscope was something of a huge blunder. I put that into my Gold Race fleet because I wasn't able to fit in a canceler, and I wanted a way to deal with enemy crew abilities... but it didn't occur to me that it could be used against me. There was a mention of Sunken Treasure being a problem, but I wasn't entirely clear on that. I should have included more Trees. And Castaway could have been very interesting, given how complicated crew management got in some of those games.

Although now I'm disappointed that UPS 4 didn't make a better showing. I guess trying to fit in the Silver Explorer made the ship selection weaker. Has anyone had any luck with a Silver Explorer strategy?

Perhaps you should check the forum more often. Razz

The games were quite fun to do, even if sometimes it got a little repetitive (so many Captain Jack Sparrow...).

See Gold Race 2.0 my stab at a CJS, gold bonus and silver explorer shenanigans. It's so far not been tested in a real game, but perhaps Ben and I (or you) could test it on VASSAL after we finish the 16 fleet game.

I've done just about literally all I can to advertise VASSAL (to the point where some people may be quite annoyed with me haha), and if I didn't PM you specifically about it (like I did most fans of the game on this site), it was simply because your account was inactive/disabled at the time. I always keep the VASSAL thread unlocked, and try to keep it on the first page of the forum, though the huge influx of new threads since Command the Oceans ended has knocked it to the second page as of now.

Not to dissuade you from doing that, but part of the reason I still write normal BR's for every game I play is because it's much faster to consume than watching the videos. That's actually something I want to work on - making the recordings of the games more exciting or engaging to watch. The view counts do reflect that they're not a hot topic haha, but the length certainly has something to do with that too.

Sunken Treasure takes up two cargo spaces and must be taken since it's a face up UT. Those are big problems if you cannot trade it away, and even if you can, sometimes it's better to trade away a negative UT like Natives.

Also, I'm just now seeing this from the Pirate Code, which would make for some very odd situations... overall it would be better if you knew you'd get a high value, but rolling low both times and having to dump essential crew from the HP/etc on an island is not something that would improve the fleet.

The Pirate Code wrote:
-If other cargo can be unloaded to make room for this treasure, it must be unloaded. If the ship has fewer than two cargo spaces and/or sufficient cargo cannot be unloaded, this treasure is still loaded and will take up the additional space as it becomes available.

Castaway is a UT I need to use more often, it's incredibly interesting. However, the cargo and point limitations of the extreme setups could lead to it being hard to use.

UPS 4 was 3-0 going into the tournament (4 wins in my games that is) and had some close games against the Quick fleet. It's still a great fleet, and the Quick fleet did a bit better than we expected. It's worth revisiting, but the Gold Race and UPS 2 fleets are better at the "bonus game" if you will.

Subject: Wild animal island   PostPosted: Sat Jan 13, 2018 5:15 pm Reply with quote

The 16 fleet game has continued with a partial turn.

After finding Natives, the swarm fleet loaded the remaining gold from this wild island onto 3 different ships. However, the Algeciras and Armada teamed up to sink their escort, the Carrion Crow. At the left, the Lezard has rammed a mast off the Hai Peng of UPS 2.

In the deep south, the Minuteman flotilla missed all of her shots on the Roanoke and Neptuno. The Artillery Strike fleet did not reengage with the American Pirates or RtSS English, instead opting to regroup in preparation for a potential round-earth assault from the HMS Grand Temple. However, after considering all the options (with an EA available from Calico Cat), the GT decided to stay close to home and go after the lucrative island where UPS 2 was stuck at (HP sitting around for 5 turns due to the Natives there). HMS London got things started, dismasting the HP and Lezard while staying out of range of Paradis. However, after the GT used a whirlpool and extra action to get in range of the fort, the roll came up a 6! One miss meant that the mighty GT couldn't even damage the fort, and that's exactly what happened. It may look silly now, but this was the best route Lord Thomas Gunn saw after considering the various options. Attacking the canoes and Artillery Strike in the deep south may not have led to any gold, and it's quite possible that the cannons of that Spanish fleet would cripple the GT next turn. Whirlpooling to the center would mean the GT would be stuck in a crossfire between Armada and the San Cristobal, with towing home multiple swarm ships for gold not a likely possibility. With the Joya del Sol in a fog bank, there were almost no gold targets within reach of the GT from that whirlpool at the center right. In the southeast, attacking UPS 5 likely would have been a disaster (Zeus + Paradis at the same island O_O). Overall the HMS GT fleet made the choice they saw as the most profitable in the long term, as they will still try to win the game despite being more of a 1v1 deathmatch fleet. If they can indeed destroy Paradis and UPS 2 in the process, that wild island has at least a 7 along with all the gold the HP has seen but not loaded.

In the north, the San Cristobal has sunk the Banshee's Cry of Norvegia and dismasted the Pique of the swarm fleet. In the far east, the Quick fleet finds more misfortune. They found TWO packs of Wolves on that island, and although some Turtles would have aided them since they aren't loaded onto the ship, the swarm fleet played Jailhouse Dog immediately to knock out the turtles. So, we have the dog from PotC eating a bunch of turtles while a ton of wolves look on. O_O Quite the spectacle. XD

All that, and there are still 6 fleets left to go in Turn 2!
