Subject: Miniature Review Contest/Challenge, Story Time!!   PostPosted: Sat Dec 24, 2016 10:15 pm Reply with quote

Lord Denton was the winner of the last MRC, but he has once again vanished. People have wanted another review contest, and I had an idea for one, but wanted to think it out a little first. Thinking time is now done! Here is the next Contest:

Review a miniature of your choosing in a narrative format, ala Calico Cat, A letter to Thomas Gunn.

Writing a review is no small task, and writing one from the point of view of a story is harder. Thus if you decide to enter you will have until the end of January to complete and post your story review. I will judge as quickly as I can, but it will take a while. Therefore I will give myself two weeks after the 'grand reveal day' to thoroughly read and judge each review. This will put the contest ending some time in February, which is long but for what I am asking it should be long enough especially considering real life happenings.

Please post a reply to this thread if you want to participate, and I advise you to do so sooner rather than later, as it will give you more time to think about your review.

You may post your entry earlier than the 31st of January (Grand reveal/Grand Post Day). I will NOT accept entries posted after midnight January 31st.

Judging Scoring will most likely take two weeks for me to do a good job evaluating and reading each review.

Prizes: None at the moment other than bragging rights and the rights to run the next challenge/contest.

Scoring/judging will be based on:
1. Votes the review receives
2. Creativity in story of review
3. How well written the review is
(not necessarily in that order)

If you have a question, please post it and we'll work things out.

Lastly:

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I'll try my best to participate, but this kind of thing isn't my forte.

Come now, we're a decently creative bunch here, I think, while challenging, it shouldn't be too hard to write a little narrative story for a review.

That said, hopefully people are not scared of this challenge and some more people decide to participate. Then again, I posted it today (still the 24th where I am) so perhaps I'm worrying over nothing. XD

I will participate, for sure. I assume this narrative works better for a crew, so that will at least make choosing a topic easier heh.

I forget is it a requirement or preference that we review pieces that haven't been reviewed before? I remember some previous contest seemed inspired by reviewing the unreviewed

I've had a moment of inspiration, so I'm looking into the possibilities of what I want to review and this seems kind of important. Most of my implementations at the moment would involve previously reviewed pieces. Though if I needed to, I could hopefully find something untouched, or tweak my idea just enough

Since this contest doesn't involve committing to Vassal, I'm hoping I can get an entry in before classes start again in January.

should we post who we are planning to review? Just so we don't duplicate?

You do not need to choose an un-reviewed miniature to review. You may choose to review any piece in the game, Ships, Crew, Events, or Unique Treasures.

You may if you want to.

That is quite possible, a crew review would be easier since crew are people who you can imagine backgrounds for above and beyond the supplied flavor text. A narrative review for a non-crew piece would be more challenging, but should still be do-able.

Admittedly a little rushed tonight because school kind of took over, but I had enough done while over break I couldn't (and didn't want to) skip entering this contest

i see you chose to review a ship notalwaysyou. Very interesting, I'll have to read this one closely.

If there is anyone else who would like to enter and post an entry, you still have until midnight tomorrow(pacific time).

However, unless I am mistaken, there are three members who have said they want to enter. Volt, Notalwaysyou, and A7. If more people want to enter, but want more time,(or if entrants want to edit their entries) I could extend the deadline by a little.

I originally wanted to enter, but between the flu, pneumonia, going back to school, other priorities (normally I prioritize Pirates which isn't always the wisest idea probably heh), and having no creative direction (I tried writing historical fiction on a few assignments for school a while back and never loved the result), this was about the last challenge I could or would enter.

So, you're removing yourself from the contest? Ok, I can understand, health before contests and whatnot.

That leaves Volt and Notalwaysyou as the only entrants. If there is anyone else who would like to enter, you have 4 1/2 hours as of this posting until midnight.
If people want me to extend the deadline by a little, please reply and I will gladly see if I can extend the deadline.
