General description:

My next review is none other than Rocket Racer, another member of M.O.D.O.K.'s 11. For the points the figure is decent with "Ain't Nothing Going to Stop Me" Trait, allowing him to ignore all terrain except indoor walls and indoor blocking for movement, along with front loaded HSS makes RR very mobile, however low attack (high 9) and defense (high 16) values will see him outclassed by most other modern age figures. Combat Reflexes makes him a good tie-up piece and late-dial Running Shot paired with Psychic Blast makes him useful in the end game. Finally, the Spider-man TA lets him copy useful TA's, some that may help boost his sad AV and DV.

Uses/Strategies and Game Play:

Rocket Racer would be best used to harass your opponents back field support by using his HSS and Trait to move around the map quickly while sniping with his 6 range. Given his best AV is 9 with damage of 2, RR is not going to be standing toe to toe with the big boys, but at only 60 points that's not what he's suited for. He does excel in follow-up attacks against targets already softened up by your bigger hitters or with his late dial RS/PB he can land the killing blows where needed in the second half of the game.


Combos with other miniatures:

Rocket Racer works best when used with a figure with good AV's and high damage or attacks that ignore damage reducers. That way, as mentioned previously, RR can swoop in and finish off any figures that survived the initial attack. Also, an ally with Perplex or Enhancement would increase RR's offensive capabilities by either increasing his AV or damage. The wild card TA makes for greater versatility (put him on a SHIELD team and he gets +1 range and if adjacent character uses a power action his damage gets increased by +1 as well).

Ways to counteract it:

Best way to stop RR is to attack at range and exploit his weak DV and short dial (only 5 clicks). Also, Outwit his HSS and you have pretty much disarmed the "rocket"

Strengths/Pros:

He's a classic HSS, secondary attacker with little punch but at only 60 points (less than 1/3 the total for 300 point games) he's perfect to team up with figures that may help him shine. As mentioned, pairing RR with stronger figure allows him to take on the role as sidekick to help finish off enemies and his mobility makes him a point of worry for your opponent when it comes to his support figures. With enough support of his own, RR could get his stats boosted enough to make him a viable threat himself. A wild card TA almost always adds to any figures value as well.

Weaknesses/Cons:

Again, Rocket Racer's weaknesses are his low AV, DV, and damage values. Without proper support he is regulated to 'harasser' without the chance of 50/50 odds of hitting any figure with a defense value higher than 15 (an almost unheard of as a starting defense for figures in modern age). Though I am specifically reviewing RR because of his MODOKs 11 keyword, with only 2 keywords (his other being 'Outlaws' and both non-generic), he is very difficult to use in a theme-team format. Because of his lack of keywords there are better HSS figures for around the same points that allow more versatility when dealing with generic theme teams.

Artwork and aesthetics:

The sculpt for Rocket Racer is okay, it is an action pose instead of the static (bus stop) pose. I must admit that RR is a character I know little about so I really can't comment on the color or design because not familiar enough to do so.

Overall rating:

I would give Rocket Racer a 7.5 rating.
Good for his points, powers, and role on a team but low numbers can make him useless in a battle.

This is the second of my posts on the figure reviews by raytrade. I am making these posts so as to explain my votes for those reviews.

To start with; this is a figure that I had been waiting for a long time to see in clix form - and could have waited a while longer, in this case.

I happen to know a great deal about the Rocket Racer - at least as far as his origins and first several appearances (all in Amazing Spider-man, which I have). To that end, this representation is not exactly what I would deem as "correct". First, the sculpt: it is not really all that wonderful. I would have used the side of a building for him to be 'racing' up or down, and have him shooting his 'wrist-rockets' at a foe. THAT would have been awesome, and I may actually mod him to that, but I digress....

As this figure is listed as a 'Vet', I cannot speak to what he may have evolved to in the comics - like I said, I know of his origins - but to my way of thinking he should have had Energy Shield/Deflection and not Combat Reflexes at all. In my opinion that would have taken care of the Defense issue the figure currently suffers. Ah Wizkids, what're we gonna do with you??

Again, this post is not made to give the poster any grief, more to illustrate the fact this figure falls way short of my mark for 'right'. However, the post was submitted and presented in a very detailed and well thought out mode, so I will be giving it a good rating once again.
