Ok, I wanted to use a Barbary/Galley theme... people underestimate Barbary ships, and they look so cool! I have won with this fleet several times in 40 point, mixed nationality games against multiple opponents... who ignored my "harmless" Galleys until it was too late! Muahah!

The idea of this fleet is to get the gold fast (All fast ships w/Helmsman), carry as much loot as possible (all ships have large cargo before 2 crew added), avoid combat at all costs, and do so without cheat crew or magical effects. You can get 8 gold back to your island with every wave... get there fast, turn fast with galleys, and have a few cheap effects (Safe from L cannon and an island treasure trader) in the process for luck.

The only downside is the fact that the Siam is a Rev SR so it's harder to get, and it's a Pirate Galley... so you have to be playing one of the (majority) of games that allow mixed Nationality fleets.

Unit - Speed - Cargo - Ability - Nation - Cost

Star of Siam S+S+S 4 Galley Pirate 8
Helmsman -1 Pirate 2
Explorer -1 Pirate 1

Tiger’s Eye S+S+S 5 Galley, Safe from L cannon Barbary 12
Helmsman -1 Barbary 2
Explorer -1 Barbary 1

Algiers L+S 5 Galley, Isl. Trs Trade Barbary 11
Helmsman -1 Barbary 2
Explorer -1 Barbary 1

Subject: Griffin?   Posted: November 7, 2007 08:00 am

If you wanted to do an all BC fleet... the Griffin might be a workable substitute for Star of Siam. Somewhat comparable speed, same cargo capacity, and at 2 points less you'd have room for Hidden Cove (although it sounds like you want to stay away from "magical" or cheesy tactics).

So I take it you leave the helmsmen on board when you explore? Would it make more sense to transfer the helmsmen off and empty out an island?

How about UTs? Have you tried putting in Homing Beacon, Runes of Speed, Grease Barrels, Poseiden's Breath, and Skrew Engine?

All good ideas to explore! I focused on Speed and max cargo... straight up treasure grabbing power.

Abandoning crew - I thought that was illegal per the rules (Since FN), but I'll recheck - would slow them down for the return trip, but if no one's near, it might not matter so much.

Some players dump off all their non-essential crew before they explore a wild island to avoid the effects of Plague/Missionary, but there are privateers that get a bit cheesed off at this tactic and forbid it. Woelf eventually ruled that you can't drop off crew as a free action while in the middle of an explore action, but you can still either do it before an explore action or as part of transferring cargo. From the current FAQ:

quote from FAQ:

EXPLORING
Q: Can I unload treasure or crew from my ship when it explores a wild island?
A: Yes, cargo may be unloaded to a wild island during an explore action, but the effects of any unique treasures on
the island must be resolved before any other cargo can be transferred.

Q: If my ship docks at a wild island and uses an explorer crew to explore the island, can I unload that explorer to
make room for more treasure?
A: Yes, you may unload the explorer to make room for treasure, but when he leaves the ship the free explore action
he provided immediately ends. In order to load treasure back into that empty cargo space, another explore action is
required.

Essentially Woelf's ruling was if you're using an Explorer to explore an island, you have to look at the treasure on the wild island and apply the effects of any bad UTs before you can transfer any crew/cargo off the ship. This allows Plague/Missionary to function normally, but it still leaves open two methods to dump your Helmsman and use his cargo space for treasure:

1) If you're not using an Explorer, you can unload any non-essential crew after docking as a free action. On your next turn, you can explore and then reload crew if you have space available. This allows you to avoid Plague/Missionary, but takes an extra turn.

2) If you are using an Explorer, once you've seen the UTs and applied their effects, you're free to transfer cargo on or off the ship as you see fit. You can unload the helmsman and then load treasure in any order, so long as the Explorer stays on the ship.

Pretty interesting. I fall for the whole "harmless galleys" all the time. Quick and swift, they are. For some reason, I really like the look of the 1 mast galleys, though they are over-expensive and easy to destroy. But enough about me. . .

Its a pretty solid fleet, like you said fast and get treasure. Even if you lost a ship or two, you'd still be lobbied to win. Have you messed around with your fleet and swapped in Griffin and Marrakesh for Tiger's Eye? They're each 6 points, have a total of 7 cargo, and each has S+L speed. You could spread out even more and get more loot. Try it and see what happens.

Not a bad alternative if you want to spread the odds a bit. : 0

Depending on the number of islands, I have found the few times I played with this fleet that robbing 3 different islands and then getting much loot home fast is often the deciding factor.

With 4 ships, I'd want to crew the 4th ship and that would put me over the 40 point cap.

Tiger's Eye is the ship I use for whatever island is closest to an enemy, since she's safe from L cannon : )

Ah ha, thanks for the clarification. I suppose I could sac the Explorers the next round for one more cargo slot each, if when loading and looking at the treasure, it's not enough to get me over half. Assuming no enemy is near enough to make the 1 round delay matter.

This review is an "oldie" but a "goodie".

I especially like how you don't make a big stink about the generally lousy cannons on galleys. Far too many players overemphasize combat and miss out on some otherwise excellent ships and tactics. Some ships simply aren't meant to fight, and that's exactly what you're (not) doing with this fleet.

Well done.

This is one of the best fleets of all time - just need to update it by adding "Cannonball" on the Jolly Mon and kicking in Hidden Cove and FotG and it will be unstoppable!
