I know this is the moment you've all been waiting for - not! - but here are my selections of the top eight Pirate ships that a new player must absolutely have to get to stand a chance in this game.(Just to make it eaiser for myself, I'm going to go ahead and assume the Banshee's Cry is already on everybody's list of essential ships. )

Angelica made the list at the end - while it's not good to rely on her as a gunship, the Pirates are one of the few factions who can easily fit a sea dragon into their builds, having so many good treasure runners.

I've offered the relatively easily-obtainable promo Flying Dutchman, which, with a little help from some good crew, is a bargain for a 5-mast ship - it's like sailing around in half a Zeus(which, it may be noticed to the surprise of some, did not make the list).

I'm a big Star of Siam fan, so that's why she's here and not one of the other two or three ships that can easily take her place. What can I say, when it come right down to it, I love that galley ability on top of all that speed - too bad she's one of the harder-to-find super-rares, but she's well worth the effort.

Black Heart, Neptune's Hoard, Bloody Jewel, and Skipping Stone are all stand-alone ships that can only be made insanely better with the right crew, while the Revenant can deliver a nice serving of all-out firepower with nothing getting in her way. Of course, I also like Harbinger for that role, but Hammersmith and Revenant make a nice 20pt combo that's hard to beat.

Good list, like the others, although Black Heart seems out of place. It has a great base move and the 5 cargo is nice, but 13 (pre-crew) is a lot to spend for a treasure-runner (especially with all the dirt cheap competition in the Pirate fleet), and to make it usable as a gunship a cannon boost is mandatory. The link to The Headhunter is its saving grace, but that says much more about him than the ship - plenty of other Pirate ships can benefit just as much or more from him even without the benefit of a link.

As replacement options, I'll put forth Darkhawk II and Akua Lapu.

DHII is a full S slower, but more than makes up for it with a lower cost, significantly better cannons, and that massive cargo hold. It does have a negative ability but it's largely irrelevant and at worst is really easy to avoid; on the positive side, it helps pull the total cost of the ship down a few points.

Akua Lapu is right in between when it comes to speed, and it actually costs a tiny bit more than Black Heart, but like DH II it has far better cannons and more cargo space to work with. You're limited to only three crew, but since they don't take up any space the ship effectively has 7 cargo, which is perfect for filling up with stolen treasure, captured crew, or even a full spread of equipment. It's also a galley like Star of Siam, so not only is it much more resilient than Black Heart, it's much better looking too!

They were my 9 & 10.

The arguments for those two are very strong, but for me, Black Heart made the cut largely because, as I mentioned in my review( ) of her, she can run "crew-less", which is a real bonus when starting out. Her ability can only complement any crew that might later be added, especially as the Pirates have no 0LR re-rollers.

Thanks for the input.

I did refer to the extra point cost of the Harbinger as a reason for picking the Revenant, but I guess it really depends on how much a person values the Harbinger's ability - sometimes having your best gunship being sent back to your HI is not the greatest thing, but at other times it might be quite useful - I've always found it a challenge to get in the needed explore action in order to trigger the ability, so I usually just opt to sink the enemy vessel, which the Revenant can do easily enough.
