With all due respect to the other common Viking fleet in this challenge, I believe the Vikings do have what it takes to run gold*. Of course, having a ship capable of taking 6 shots where most others will only be getting 3 or 4 is an advantage that cannot be ignored, either.

The Huggin has always been a favorite Viking gunboat of mine; the simple addition of a captain and a helmsman makes it a very effective force in the midst of a bunch of 2- and 3-mast ships. Her ability ties in quite well with the Longboat keyword, too.

The Sleipnir gives up an explorer for the extra speed to get to the islands first, while the Hlidskjalf can follow along and run the choicest gold coins back home. Being pure-Viking, by rule the delivered gold can then be used to used to build whatever fort or forts best suit the situation at hand, if need be.

For UT's, Rum will reward the Sleipnir for not having any crew, while Cannibals will take away an opponent's explorer, hopefully. Plunder would be a nice bonus, but it could also slow an opponent's treasure runner at a critical moment, perhaps allowing the Huggin to get in range. And Smuggled Goods is another favorite of mine that the Hlidskjalf will be able to make great use of, especially since it doesn't take up a cargo space.


*I honestly did think of this fleet last night, before I saw maciver's, so it's nice to see we're on the same page.

Great Fleet! I understand about when you came up with yours. No problem. As long as they aren't identicle. I like how you "run" gold. You could win with that, but I am not sure. Your gunship is the way to go. Both speed, cannons, and ability. Overall, a solid 3.8

I like what you did here, but for pure cost effectiveness Sleipnir and Hjildskjalf (spell check) just can't keep up with other treasure runners. Also, Huginn is too slow to take down most enemy gunships.
Are you sure you've got enough forts
Overall, I'm glad that you used Vikings. But a gunship moving at L+S and the gold runners with high points and low cargo don't sell it for me. 3.5

Very good, for a Viking fleet. Your gunship is a beatstick that's going to be a serious threat to anything that can't knock all of it's masts off with a first strike. Your pair of runners should be able to bring at least a little bit home, even if they'll quickly fall behind most others that will be out collecting goods.

Hope for a big score with that first island and you've got a fair chance of winning with this one, although some of the other fleets out there may end up running circles around these ships. The forts could be a lifesaver for you, although you probably didn't need to list them all - the two or three most likely to get used would have been enough (presumably Paradis de la Mer or Fortaleza Dorada would be the first choice, depending on what else was on the table.)

Overall, a 4.2 - Excellent use of what was available to the Vikings, but just short of being a top tier fleet.

Haha, yes, I think I was trying to make the point that the Vikings have their choice of forts when they first build one - it was one of the few saving graces they had for the challenge.

Man, it is tough sledding to get Fleet of the Week - what was that, over a year and a half? And all 4's, too, like I always say, it just goes to show you don't need 5's to win this thing.

That's a nice feeling - to come back in after 3 weeks and see a Viking Captain on the homepage. They were hard enough to get when PotFN came out, so it's like credit long overdue.
