This is the first fleet that I have posted and would like some feedback. To start, my friends and I generally play 50 point games, using only one faction. We play round earth and use 20 random pieces of treasure, needing 11 to win. We rarely use events so things like mermaids, raft or divers shouldn’t be a problem. The purpose of this fleet is not to collect a majority of the gold to win, but to collect enough that when you sink you opponents ships it will put you over the half way mark.

Ship #1
It has been said that the San Christobal is over used, but it doesn't change the fact that the ship is fast. Luis Zuan is the cheapest keyword captain in the game and is well suited to giving the San Cristobal +L. More or less acting like a captain-helmsman for half the cost. Roberto Santana allows you to have a world hater on any ship once a turn. The extra cargo space lets you load some treasure if the need arises.

Ship #2
The Santos Romanos has solid movement and decent guns. Its small size make it look less threatening than it is, but its ability to eliminate two mast per hit can be devastating. Duque Alfonzo’s crew killing ability adds another level of danger to this ship that an opponent might not expect.

Ship #3
As a gold runner I chose La Monarca because for 8pts it is hard to find a better hauler. S+S+S movement makes a helmsman optional and Dominic Freda allows you to explore, load and move away all in one turn.

Strategy
The main goal at the beginning of the game is to separate your opponent’s main gunship from the rest of the fleet. By sending two small ships out to collect gold it should lure your opponent’s gunship out. Once in range of your enemy, reveal Duque Alfonzo and Roberto Santana for an extra surprise. With luck your opponent’s ship will be down two mast and a crew or possibly derelict. You could hedge your bets and ram the ship but that opens you up to boarding parties. Either way the Santos Romanos is meant to be a sacrifice allowing La Monarca to get away. Once your opponent has divided his forces send the San Cristobal out after their gold runners or help the Santos Romanos. If going after gold runners, wait until they have collect gold before attacking. By this point La Monarca should have delivered gold home and be on its second and final trip. Sinking a gold runner or having La Monarca get a second load back should finish out the game.

Ways to counteract
-Mermaids
-Easily stopped with a canceller
-Using Raft could throw a wrench in to the plan
-Any ship that requires two hits to eliminate a mast (Consitution or La Corse)

Although it may be obvious to all what the strategy is, or why you chose these ships, you still need to state as much with some description about the fleet.

That said, I particularly like the Santos/Duque combination for a support ship? Even for a two master, potential rank 2 guns (thanks to Roberto) dis-masting two per hit with a crew killer is a potent mix.

Will reserve a vote until there is something written up about it.

Good first fleet!

Keep in mind that people here probably won't feel inclined to vote on a fleet that uses two of the most played ships (San Cristobal and Monarca) in the game. In addition, I've read comments saying that it is not that hard to make a good fleet if you're using the San Cristobal (players are biased against her sometimes, because she is 'broken'). That being said, it would certainly perform well in a game. A battle report from one of your games would also make the write-up more interesting.

It's good you mentioned the weaknesses; a canceler would probably spell the end for this trio. You could consider dropping Santana for Nemesio Diaz, and adding an oarsman to one of the ships. However, then the Cristobal only hits 50% of the time (theoretically, at least), which isn't enough to count on, especially against a tougher ship like the Constitution or Acorazado.

Good solid fleet, but really nothing that hasn't been done countless times before.

I like the combo of Santos Romanos and de Castilla, although I question your expectations when using it as bait. Any opponent who honestly thinks that's a treasure-runner, especially with the cargo hold full of crew, needs to have their head examined.
