A fleet I used awhile back. The game I used this in had a unique terrain setup, a literal barrier reef, around a dozen of them placed end to end, dividing the playing field almost neatly in half.

Brandywine
She began the game spitting out trade currents, primarily for the Frontier. Once six of them had been placed, she ditched the Navigator and went gold hunting.

Blackwatch
The gunship extraordinaire. She cruised around, protecting the smaller runners, and driving off the opposing ships. With cargo to spare, she also grabbed a few coins now and then.
-EDIT- With a little crew changing, she's now more optimized for her gunship role.

Frontier
Gold runner deluxe, the largest cargo hold I've seen, and a decent clip. Equipped with a mandatory helmsman, she got to the islands quickly, and drained them within a few turns.


This fleet won the game, but wound up with all her ships at the bottom. Part of the reason I won was that I wound up on one side of the barrier reef all by myself. My HI and about six other islands.

Was the Blackwatch sunk because she didn't get the first shot? I only ask because I pretty much never send out a gunship moving L without a helmsman.

That being said this is a nice fleet. Right now I'd only give it a 3 because a ship like the Blackwatch really needs a helmsman to maximize her effectiveness. The specialist could easily be swapped out.

Actually, she didn't do all that much, speaking of Blackwatch. As I mentioned in the description, I was on one side of a barrier reef all by myself, my opponents were on the other side, and killed each other before coming after me with their surviving runners. By then victory was all but assuredly mine, between the Frontier and the occasional coins grabbed by Brandywine and Blackwatch, it didn't matter that she was slow. Besides, for this game I favored speed over firepower, and used trade currents to my advantage.

I'd swap Richard out for a regular captain/helmsman/oarsman setup, allowing you to keep the FPS on the Blackwatch. No real need for an explorer on a Hoist keyword ship, so I'd put an oarsman on the Frontier instead.

i was thinking of a way to make this a 40 point fleet, but decided it's better off at 50-55.

You could... Blackwatch + captain/helmsman for 21, then Frontier + helmsman for 19. Perry on Blackwatch would allow you to have oarsmen on both ships, perhaps exploding shot or FPS on Blackwatch, etc. It's debatable how much the Brandywine/navigator is really adding (to paraphrase Woelf I believe). She's a solid ship but might be stuck in between with this kind of setup.

My thoughts precisely. I may eventual do that, but for now I'll leave it at a 50-55 point fleet.
