My friend and I who play War at Sea wanted to start playing 100 point games again. He declares they are more of a challenge. I graciously excepted and so now I begin to make my fleets to play against him.

This fleet should be able to take all comers. The Hipper with the Galster and the Ludeman should be able to take on all comers save for Battleships. The three ships in one sector will repel all but the most ardent air attackers.

The three U-Boat screen will form a picket and take out all targets they can. Priorities will be destroyers and battleships. These will be key because they will be my best defence against Battleships.

The air wing will have their own priority. The Kondors will have a primary mission of sending their missles at targets like Destroyers that would take out my subs, or carriers, or even cruisers. More than likely they will target the destroyers to allow the U-boats to run wild. After they use their missles, they will mostly pinpoint, or dive bomb targets of opportunity. During all of this the fighters will fly cover.

Subject: A few comments on the 100pt German fleet.   Posted: September 23, 2009 12:24 pm

I was thinking something along the same lines... use the Germans for raiding and such in a low-cost fight. (As soon as it goes above 100pts though, the Germans definitely lose the edge to other countries (read: US and Japanese) with better per-cost units.)

Here is my take:

2x U-66 (12p)
1x U-510 (11p)
1x FW-200 Kondor (6p)
2x Bf-109 (7p)
1x Admiral Scheer (20p)
1x Prinz Eugen (17p)
1x Z20 Karl Galster (8p)

I started almost the same way with multiple Kondor. The problem with relying on the Kondor is the single use of the standoff ability. I can't see sinking 6 points each into basically a one-use bomb platform. (That and with armor 4 they tended to get aborted way too often to be reliable against the US ships with range-1 anti-air). The real value is in the pin-pointer ability... That said, I figured I would scrap extras of the Kondor and Bf-109 for the points needed for Admiral Scheer. Both Admiral Scheer and Prinz Eugen have enough standoff (range 4) to easily land hits on escort destroyers, while also giving me an option against heavier combatants. I've found the tandem of Admiral Scheer (vs destroyers or cruisers) and Prinz Eugen (cripple) is fairly effective, even without the subs. Sorry... I plan to have my dice betray me when it comes to torpedoes and just plan like those points are already gone. Oh, after construction, I had about 7 points of leeway, which combined with a switch to a single U-510 turned into the Karl Galster (in order to cluster all three surface combatants to defend against heavy air assault and to take over ASW duties from the U-510).

Let me know if that mess is helpful at all, and good luck with ze Germans.

Oh I know the value of the Scheer and Eugen. I just tend to like to try different things, usually at the detriment of winning.

Nice. I wonder what this would do if you took away the 3 Kondors and added another Admiral Hipper ?
