*Note, this says 49 points because of the fort - its really 45.

Well, after two weeks worth of on and off pondering, and trying to come up with something original, I went with the fleet you see below. It may not be the most effective fleet, and darn I feel dirty using Mycron, but it was the only way to get a second action to my main ship, which is desperately needs with only L movement. Of all the fleets I considered, this one seemed the most fun.

I wanted to focus on the combo of Vega and the 2 hit ability. The Santa Lucia's ability and Vega creates the necessity to hit her 3 times in one shoot action to take off a mast. In going against other fleets in this challenge, that can really only happen with a Musketeer or Marine, or Broadsides to bypass the defensive ability (or cancelled out by a ship like the Delaware .) Ramming is a major concern, however, especially from a unshootable submarine. No room for a canceller, unfortunately.

The other thing I think is important for this challenge is that fleets with small ships will probably have a large number of crew. Hence, the inclusion of the Armada which will hopefully take care of many pesky crew. Flotillas have the same ability as Santa Lucia, which makes it a perfect match. Add in the musketeer and you have 7 guns. Even at 50% hit, it should take out any ship in this challenge, except maybe another ship like itself.

Mycron is as safe as he can be on the unboardable, hopefully unshootable (unless Davy Jones or something like it possesses it and moves it from the home island) Bilge. Mycron will help the slow as heck Santa Lucia get into position, and wreak havoc among her opponents. The sniper ability of the Armada will get through ships like Prince of Chicester (Ben, I swear I had this fleet ready before you posted yours heh) or ships that cannot be hit by red cannons as well.

With only 5 points, I resorted to using a well known ship to run my gold. Sure, no helmsman and no explorer is not ideal, but hopefully L'Intrepide can empty two islands while the Santa Lucia does her thing. (And Hopefully, Mycron won't mind that they are working together). If needed, the semi broken (but thematically perfect) Paradis de la Mer and Ramsgate are there to make things safer, as Forts are a little mightier going against fleets in this challenge. If something happens to the Santa Lucia, the Bilge can drop Mycron at the home island and run for treasure herself. If against a fleet with a lot of small ships, the Santa Lucia could also drop the Armada near the enemy home island and split up the attack.

Finally, I thought a lot about which UT to use. I didn't want to go Odin's Revenge, and Rum and Turtles were both VERY tempting. But in the end, I was worried about getting gold, and since I had a Musketeer in my fleet, I chose Wolves. The chance of another person using a Musketeer or Marine is high, but hopefully I can use this to my advantage, perhaps even building the French Fort on the island while Santa Lucia is busy. In any event, if it stops an enemy from getting gold, or delays her ship, it gives more time for Santa Lucia to get in position to stop the gold ship.

Thanks for the challenge! It was fun! I'll post some of my other ideas on the forum once everyone has their posted!

This one was tough. I love the mini-Acorazado idea, and that ship is just deadly. Wolves fits in nicely, especially since we haven't really seen any other musketeers or marines so far. Mycron is too bad, but I think the biggest weakness is the gold running. It's good, but not quite enough for a 5. 4.3 rounded down. I like this fleet.

I agree with Ben on this one, tough. Looking at this stacked against my fleet I'm having a hard time picturing a victory for either fleet. Both fleets have some excellent offense, and we both have flotillas. However I have concerns for your goldship. If it gets sunk or captured, things would not be so good for you methinks. The offensive defense of a mini-Acorazado would keep most ships away, including mine. If a 4.5 was available, that's what I'd give, but since the vote only recognizes whole numbers.....4. Nice fleet!

Would you favor high-value coins in your treasure distribution? This seems like a fleet that needs them.

@notalways: A helmsman doesn't help because of the flotilla.

My other choice instead of the musketeer was a shipright and oarsman, but I thought Wolves was funner =)

What if someone finds an Abandoned Crew Musketeer on the same Island as Wolves?
