Since they were eligible, I wanted to use my favorite ships, the catamarans. I had some other ideas, but they were basically one trick gimmick fleets focused on maxing out one of the fleet's statistics (e.g. cargo, speed, points/number of ships). I settled on building a fleet around a catamaran simply because I think they are elegant ships and I have never actually had used them in a fleet before. Since there are only three in the game, why not use all of them! Each catamaran offers decent speed and relatively good cargo capacity along with a unique defensive ability (1 in 3 chance of hits missing, can't be rammed, extra hull takes damage and prevents being pinned or boarded). My challenge was to then fill out the rest of this fleet with pieces that complemented the catamarans' strengths, abilities, and elegance (going for some style points ).

First up, HMS Hermes. To add to her ability I gave her a helmsman to up her speed to L+S+S. Taking advantage of her speed and ability to ignore terrain, she also carries James Cook. She can now sail past islands leaving them explored for the other ships in the fleet very quickly. Depending on placement of islands of course, ideally she would sail within S of as many as possible on her way to the farthest "safe" island (meaning if there is one that would be swarming with enemy ships by the time she got there, she'd go to another). If possible grabbing one treasure from an island as close to the enemy as feasible to deprive them of that one at least.

Second up, Skipping Stone. This ship is crewed with The Hag of Tortuga, breaking with the elegance and beauty theme (yet I believe she fits nicely in her own way), she was necessary to flesh out the rest of the fleet. Skipping Stone is basically to run interference for the other two ships and pick up cargo where she can.

Lastly, Cannibal King. This is the treasure runner. She gives up one of her cargo spaces for a helmsman to help her keep pace with the other ships.

Other than ships, I've also included Mermaids and Turtles.

Tactics: The focus of this fleet is to grab as much treasure as possible as quickly as possible. It is not meant for attacking other ships, as there is no true gunship. However, each ship does have servicable guns in a pinch. With its re-roll ability and L-range guns, Skipping Stone is probably the closest to gunship in this fleet. Skipping Stone's re-roll will hopefully also allow her to reduce any damage when combined with the catamaran ability. As stated before, HMS Hermes' basic function is to pave the way for the other two ships to collect treasure. She can also be used later in the game to confound the opponent's fleet by using Cook's ability to force them to re-explore wild islands to collect any treasure.

Mermaids would be used defensively to halt any ship with crew. I am assuming that fleets will have gunships with a lot of crew (at the very least a captain and maybe helmsman). These can be stopped if they ever menace a ship in my fleet. Barring that, if the opponent has a treasure runner stacked with at least a helmsman and explorer, Mermaids can be used to prevent the ship from running treasure for a few turns.

I selected Turtles for my unique treasure simply because I love Turtles! If I find Turtles, it'll give the opponent too many targets to deal with and possible give me a few more gold beyond the total at set up. If the opponent finds Turtles, well at least we get to see a whole bunch of turtles swimming around (aww!).

Thanks to brettb45 for putting this challenge together. It was a lot of fun trying to find the right combination to complement the parts of the fleet and hopefully stay within a specific theme. Good luck to everyone in the challenge!

You might have considered using "Cannonball" Gallows instead of the Hag. He's less monstrous!

Ha, ha! I did in fact consider it! But, for some reason I like the dichotomy she gives to the fleet.

interesting to see someone using Catamarans for the challenge. they'll be obviously bigger than the other ships out there.
