On a whim, opened a pack of Spanish Main last night, and popped an 'El Garante'. Couldn't get the thought of a three ship Spanish fleet out of my head, so, after looking through my crew...
El Garante just looks fun to use. It's a gunship, and I'm making no bones about that. The Firepot Specialist was just kind of there, but I've never used one before, and this ship seems like the most advantageous of the three for it to be placed.
Honestly, I think I'd overlooked the Morning Star when I first played. Constantly going against combat-heavy fleets, and not being one for the speed game in general, it tended to just sit aside while I used pretty much anything else. However, I'm starting to see the error of my ways here. While I promise not to use it in every fleet I post, it was a logical choice for this fleet. Plus, the added Helmsman gives her the ability to run if the action gets too heavy, or dash back from home island to give the El Garante that added +1 to cannon rolls in the heat of battle.
On the other hand, I will always try to fit El Leon into a fleet of mine. It was the first ship card out of my first pack, and I was kind of hooked from that point. It looked sleek, the cannons were good, and it had an effect that mitigated getting rammed!
Placing a Captain to this ship is all it needs, as it moving at an even pace with El Garante allows me to be on patrol with eight cannons that hit at better than two, even if the Morning Star is out collecting treasure.
