Fleet "Fog Hopping–Gold Running"

Fleet "Fog Hopping–Gold Running"
48 Points

This is the first of what will be two "fog hopping" fleets. One of these will be combat oriented and the other will be based around gold-gathering. This is not the most effective strategy and works far more well as a gimmick in larger games than an actual 40 Point, by the rules match. However, it is still fun and with a little luck on the setup (I.E. nobody debating your fog-bank placement) it can do some fun stuff.

Now, there are 6 game pieces (five ships, one sea creature) with the ability to "teleport" between fog banks.
Those pieces are:
Alligator
Howl
Sea Hag
Hangman's Joke
Needle
Mist Walker
There is also technically the potential to make two more game pieces capable of ye old teleportation. Through the "copy" ability one can make the Behemoth eligible for this little trick. One can also use Davy Jones to make virtually any other ship in the game (provided the points allow it and there is a way to get crew of any nationality, which there usually is) capable of popping through fog-banks.
However, my group typically plays pure-nationionality fleets. In a range of 40-100 points recently.

First up for the "gold running" version of this fleet is the Hangman's Joke .
It has a number of attributes working for it. Most importantly, cargo space. Without Davy Jones to bring in something else, this ship has the highest cargo of all fog hoppers. It also has an L base move, which is mediocre at best in my mind. However that cargo allows use of a helmsman, without breaking the bank or knocking your hold down to near-useless territory. However, if we are willing to sacrifice another slot, we could add an explorer. This would put us at a 14 point ship, moving L+S (plus chance to teleport) with an explorer and two cargo spaces left. Not bad.

Our second ship is going to be the Howl . At 11 points with only 2 cargo it's slightly more than I want to pay, for slightly less cargo space than I want. However that makes it particularly handy as our escort ship. We'll toss a captain on, so that we can defend ourselves from other raiders, using our Long-3's. I also debated a helmsman on here, which would open this guy up to having solid range upon exiting the fog-bank. Handy for first-strike and such, but I'm thinking we would rather have that space to pick up an extra-explored coin and skrrt on home. Instead of picking fights with potentially larger ships... Now, the next sneaky thing to pop on here is a Smokepot Specialist so we can crank out new fog banks, in case we need a quick escape, or if we need to trap a potentially threatening enemy ship in one while we scurry off with the gold.

The third ship for this fleet is arguably the most important because it's the only thing that adds any durability to the fleet... the Sea Hag . A disappointing hold, and kind of pricy... but it has three cargo spaces and more importantly... masts! It adds durability to the fleet while retaining the incredible potential of fog hopping.
We'll probably just add a captain, and a helmsman. In order to keep the cannons active and moving along at a decent pace. This also leaves one space open in case we happen to be able to do any boarding to take coins. One could also consider throwing another smokepot specialist on here, however that removes the space for a coin, and just observing this fleet I think that coin-slot is desperately needed. So we will leave it open.

The strength of this fleet is the ability to teleport through terrain, obviously. It is lacking in virtually every other area... cargo... firepower... durability... etc. that said, this fleet has done reasonably well for me in one 50 point game, placing 2nd out of five players. That may have just been because they ripped each-other apart with better ships so I flew under the radar, but... still counts ;)

Is the Howl actually supposed to have the smokepot specialist? Either way, this is a tough strategy to win with, but at least it's fun.

It's tough to give this higher than a 3.7 (rounded up to 4)... too bad the Cursed didn't get better (or simply more) fog hoppers.

What point limit is this intended to work in? I made a similar fleet some time ago for 60 point games.

It could go either way. I left it off intentionally but it still fits into a 50 point game if you add it. It is not a very viable strategy to win with unless you can invest in all of the ships that have the ability, and the Behemoth and DJC Davy Jones.

50 points was the intended amount.

Kind of; smokepot specialists are 3 points (I think 2 would have been better) but you can simply drop the explorer on the Hangman's Joke.

Gahhhhh, totally forgot that they were three. But yeah it's easy to enough to fit in.
